If you have to give a present to someone and you don't know what to give to him, you should think about that person first. Probably if that person enjoys reading you could give him a book. If you don't know what he likes you should ask his friends first. However, remember that if that person appreciate you, he won't be annoyed if the present is not the best, so keep that on mind!
From my point of view, if you find yourself under these circumstances it is because you do not really know the gift's receiver and, consequently, his tastes. Therefore, I advise you to gather some money with other friends who are also going to the party but dubious about their presents, and buy something in common. By this way, you can brainstorm all together in order to decide the perfect birthday present. This process will be much simpler than choosing the gift alone and, besides, you will save money!
